ABOUT JANA MANASH

The project aims at creating capacity at the ULB level to create a space for the identification of mental illness, treatment of persons with mental illness and referral resource center at the ULB level. This will be done primarily through capacity building of CDS members as well as workshops with self-help groups and the political leadership as well as employed ‘decision makers’ in the ULB. The project will also map mental health facilities and infrastructure at the ULB level and produce information and communication material for further replication of the project objectives beyond the project period.

PROJECT AREA -: Kamarhati, Khardah and Rajarhat-Gopalpur Municipalities

PROJECT OBJECTIVES

  • Creating therapeutic communities at the ULB level who will safeguard and protect the interest and rights of persons with psychosocial disabilities. These groups will advocate for the inclusion of people with psychosocial disabilities into municipal planning, services and facilities.
  • CDS members will undergo regular trainings that will empower them with information on critical issues such as, mental health, disabilities to be able to work as referral centers with the health departments and as barefoot professionals within the concerned ULB’s
TARGET GROUP Primary – All CDS members within the concerned ULB’s Secondary – Decision Makers in ULB’s Tertiary – People with psychosocial disabilities and their families

PROJECT ACTIVITIES

  • Need Assessment of CDS members
  • Community meetings with multistakeholders
  • Liaison with Municipal authorities
  • Development of Training module on Walker’s Cycle
  • Intensive training with selected and interested CDS members, SHG members and health workers
  • Exposure visit to mental hospitals, day care centers and other NGOS
  • Organizing Jan-Manas Mela
  • Treatment and referral services to all family members of CDS members suffering from psychological problems

OUTPUTS

  • No of trainings / workshops - 80
  • Number of beneficiaries trained - 105
  • Resource mapping and needs assessment report
  • Number of action projects and materials generated for each project - maximum 8
  • Proposed contact kiosk in space provided by ULBS
  • Jan manas mela- an exhibition of the action projects
  • Evaluation and final report

EXPECTED OUTCOMES/IMPACT

  • 105 CDS members trained in mental health
  • Creation of 20 Leaders to act as Change agents
  • Another 150 members - trained by 20 CDS members
  • Support to all family members of CDS members suffering from psychological problems
  • Capacity building of the people to deal with mental disabilities & human right
